Floral Care:
A step-by-step guide on looking after your new arrangement, and how to get the longest life out of your beautiful blooms.
Thank you for choosing Burford’s Blooms! We want your flowers to stay vibrant and fresh for as long as possible, and we’re here to help with a few simple tips for keeping them in top condition. Here’s your guide to floral care:
1. Wet Wrap & Transport
All of our bouquets arrive wrapped in a temporary wet wrap to keep them hydrated during transit. If you’re picking up your flowers from our studio, please make sure not to leave them in a hot car as heat can cause the blooms to wilt prematurely. Once you’re able, unwrap the blooms and place them in a clean vase filled with cool water. Adding a small dash of bleach will help keep the water fresh and free of bacteria, helping your flowers last longer.
2. No Flower Food Here!
At Burford’s Blooms, we don’t believe in using flower food (floral preservatives). While they may seem like a quick fix, they actually encourage blooms to open faster, which means they’ll wilt sooner. We prefer to let nature take its course and embrace the natural beauty of your flowers without any preservatives. With proper care, your flowers will thrive and last longer without any artificial help!
3. Water, Water, Water!
Ensure your flowers are always in clean, fresh water. Change the water every 2-3 days to prevent bacterial growth. If you're looking to take it a step further, adding a small dash of bleach to the water can help keep the water clear and free from bacteria, extending the life of your blooms.
4. Keep Your Flowers Away from Fruit
As tempting as it may be to place your flowers near fruit bowls, please avoid doing so! Fruit, particularly apples, release ethylene gas, which can cause flowers to wilt quickly. To keep your flowers at their best, place them in a spot away from any fruit.
5. How Long Can You Expect Them to Last?
The longevity of your flowers depends on the variety. On average:
Cut flowers: Expect to enjoy them for 5-7 days with proper care.
Roses: Typically last around 5-7 days, but can last up to 10 days if kept in cool, fresh water.
Lilies: These can last up to 10-14 days, with a little extra care. Remember, some flowers have shorter lifespans than others, but all will thrive longer when given the proper conditions!
6. Trim the Stems
Before placing your flowers in a vase, trim the stems at a 45-degree angle under running water. This allows the stems to absorb water more efficiently. Make sure to trim them again every couple of days to maintain water absorption and keep your flowers fresh.
7. Avoid Direct Heat or Sunlight
Place your flowers in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, heaters, or drafty areas. Heat can cause flowers to dehydrate and wilt faster, so a cool, shaded area is ideal.
8. A Note on Cats and Lilies
If you have furry feline friends, please note that all varieties of lilies are highly toxic to cats. Ingesting even a small amount of any part of the lily plant can lead to severe kidney failure in cats. For the safety of your pets, please keep lilies out of reach or consider choosing a different flower variety.
9. General Care Tips
Keep your flowers in a clean vase to avoid the growth of bacteria.
Remove any wilted flowers or leaves promptly to prevent them from affecting the others.
If your flowers seem to be wilting prematurely, try placing the stems in warm water for a few hours to rehydrate them.
By following these simple tips, you’ll help your flowers last longer and stay looking their best for as long as possible. Thank you for supporting Burford’s Blooms, and enjoy the beauty of your floral arrangement! 💐
